Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
