Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
