RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
